Home Screens - Johanna Puelston

This is the 11th post in a series called Home Screens. David Sparks over at MacSparky has been doing this for a long time and I thought it would be interesting to ask my friends, family, and former co-workers what is on their Home Screens!

Johanna is a happy wife to Kyle and lucky mom of two kiddos: Jack is 2.5 year old and Taylor is 4 months old. She LOVES her iPod Touch and uses it all day long.

What are your most interesting home screen apps?

Epicurious and Everyday Food - great apps for recipes and finding inspiration for meals.

I like Feedly - a nice way to read some of the blogs to which I subscribe.

I also have a couple fun educational preschool apps for my son that are GREAT. I'll set the timer for 10 minutes and let him play while I get something done around the house. Two he likes the most are Kids Builder and Shapes.

Shazam is a super cool app that can "listen" to a song that's playing wherever you are and tell you who sings it and connects you to iTunes to download it if you want.

ReadingPlan is an app I try to use daily for Bible reading. It has several different options of plans you can use to guide your daily time in the Word of God. I chose the ESV Study Bible plan and love how you can go directly to the passage from the app and then check it off when you're done. I'm a check-things-off-nerd, so I especially enjoy that.

What is your favorite app?

Most used: Facebook. I love keeping up with my newsfeed through out the day and posting quick snaps of my kids or life via the picture options.

I also enjoy Netflix for a handy way to watch movies or TV shows. My son likes to watch short shows (like PBS shows or cartoons) and its nice to easily flip one on the iPod or my husband's iPad for him.

Favorite: Hipstamatic. Such a fun photo app. I enjoy the different lenses and film options. Sometimes I end up with pretty awesome photos that would be fun to frame. It's all the fun of multiple cameras with just one app. And most of the options are free.

Which app is your guilty pleasure?

Cut the Rope - a game by the same company that makes Angry Birds. That or Netflix to watch some show or movie.

What is the app you are still missing?

Hmm...how do I know I'm missing it? A super great menu planning/grocery list/cost comparison app would be nice. I'm sure its out there, I just don't know which one is best.

How many times a day do you use your iPhone/iPad?

Almost constantly. I mean, its always handy and I reference it many times a day - to check Facebook, check email, read blogs, look up recipes or info I need, take pictures or video, share info/photos/video, etc.

What is your favorite feature of the iPhone/iPad?

iMessage has been a super nice upgrade with the most recent iOS update. its great for texting/chatting for free with other Apple users. I also love FaceTime for keeping up with friends and family far away. And the ease of use and simple operation is great. My 2.5 year old can navigate it to play his favorite preschool app or watch a kids show on Netflix.

If you were in charge at Apple, what would you add or change?

I'd love an even better quality camera (which I think the newer ones have) and a way to make it not backlit (like a Kindle screen) if I was in natural light.

Anything else you'd like to share?

Just that my iPod is an essential part of making my life easier. And it can also be a crutch to my productivity at the same time. Oh dear. But I'd rather have it than not!
