Throughout the week I talk to a lot of different people. Inevitably, the question, "How's business going?" comes up in the conversation. I generally answer with something like this.
The first six months of Nice Guy Technology in 2011 were a little rough, but last fall started to pick up a little bit. 2012 has been significantly better as my name gets out there and people start sending referrals my way.
Since people seem interested, I thought I would give you a little idea of how business is going for me in the first half of 2012. I won't share any actual dollar figures but I will share percentage breakdowns and some of my thoughts on the numbers themselves.
I want to thank all of you for contributing to my success through taking a community ed class from me, hiring me to help you individually, and passing my name to someone you know! I couldn't do it without all of the amazing people that I come in contact with each and everyday!
2012 has been off to an amazing start! I came very close to matching my 2011 income in the first six months of 2012. In the first ten days of July I passed my 2011 total!
Income Breakdown By Month
May and June have been quite a bit busier for me than the first four months of the year. I think three reasons contributed to the past two months being stronger than the first four months of 2012.
- Increased name exposure
- Numerous referrals
- Increased repeat client business
Source of Income
I'm not joking when I say that almost half of my income comes from referrals! When I started Nice Guy Technology I determined that I wanted to build a business based on word of mouth because I believe it's the best form of advertising. I understand that in the short term it may take longer to grow, but I feel in the long term it's the best strategy for a sustainable business.
Community ed classes are the second largest source of income. We will take a closer look at a bit later on.
Income Breakdown By County (%)
Since I have lived in Dakota County since 1996 and most of the people I know live in Dakota County it would make sense that the majority of my income comes from Dakota County. It surprised me a little bit that Hennepin County comes in 2nd place. I don't teach any community ed classes in that county (will start in Fall 2012) and I don't feel like I know that many people that live there.
Income Breakdown By Gender (%)
This doesn't surprise me at all. I can think of two explanations for why the percentages are this way.
From my experience men are not as willing to admit that they need help and would rather try to figure it things out themselves.
Many of my first clients were female and they referred me to their female friends which then referred me to their female friends.
Income Breakdown By Employment Status (%)
It surprised me that the majority of my income comes from people that are still employed. When I started Nice Guy Technology I thought that that the primary demographic that I would serve would be people that were retired.
