Tech Rumors & Facts - September 2012

This is the first in a series called Tech Rumors and Facts. I will try to sum up what is happening in the world of technology and share a few of my thoughts in the process.

The time period between mid August and mid September is typically a bad time to buy consumer electronics. The reason for this is that the holiday shopping season is right around the corner and companies traditionally announce new products in September or October and have them on store shelves within weeks. In this blog post I am going to hit on some of the rumors and facts that are floating out there and share my thoughts.

Rumor: Apple will release new iPhone in September

Apple has released a new iPhone every year since the original iPhone debuted in 2007. Last year, Apple moved the release date to the fall instead of the summer. Apple has invited the press to join them on September 12th to talk about the iPhone 5. My bet is that the iPhone 5 will be released on Friday, September 21st.

The iPhone 5 will likely have the following:
* Taller screen
* New dock connector
* LTE wireless (faster than 3G)
* Better camera
* Thinner body
* New earbuds
* Faster processor and better graphics

Update: Apple announced the iPhone 5 at an event on September 12, 2012. It has all the things that I thought it would and will be released on September 21st like I predicted. To learn more about what was announced read my blog post Apple Event Recap September 2012.

Rumor: Amazon will release new Kindles and Kindle Fire

Amazon has invited the press to join them on September 6th. The belief is that Amazon will be announcing new Kindle devices at the event. I believe that we will see a new Kindle with integrated lighting like the Nook Simple Touch with Glow Light. This offers readers the best of both worlds. An easy to read display for when you are outdoors and a built in light for when reading at night.

I also belive that Amazon will release the Kindle Fire 2 this fall. I would not have recommended the first Kindle Fire to anyone after spending a few minutes using it at a local Best Buy. My gut says that Amazon's second attempt at a tablet will produce a much better device.

Update: Amazon did indeed release new Kindles and Kindle Fires on September 6th. Amazon announced the Kindle Paperwhite which is a Kindle that has integrated lighting. They announced the successor to the Kindle Fire which is 40% faster, has more memory, has better battery life and is $40 less expensive than the original. They also released the Kindle Fire HD which is an 8.9 inch version of the Kindle Fire featuring a Stunning 8.9" HD display, exclusive Dolby audio, and fastest Wi-Fi on a tablet.

Rumor: Apple will release an iPad Mini this fall

The current lineup of iPads consist of the new iPad starting at $499 and the iPad 2 starting at $399. I guarantee that an iPad Mini starting at $249 would be the hottest selliing gift this holiday season. It's also a way to introduce people into the Apple ecosystem of iCloud, iTunes, the App Store, and the Apple Retail Stores.

I believe that the iPad Mini would essentailly be an iPad 2 in a smaller form factor. That way Apple can reuse parts from the iPad 2 to keep costs down.

Fact: Microsoft will release Windows 8 this fall

Microsoft will release Windows 8 on October 26th. The cost to upgrade for existing PCs will be $39.99. If you purchased a new PC on June 2nd or later you can upgrade for $14.99. If you plan on upgrading make sure to have a full backup of your computer in case something happens during the upgrade process.

Fact: Rovio is releasing a new game called Bad Piggies

If you love Angry Birds get ready for a brand new game that features the pigs from Angry Birds. It will be available on iOS, Android, PC, and Mac on September 27th.

Rumor: Apple will release new iMacs this fall

The iMac has not been updated since May 2011. Rumors point to a new iMac being released before the holiday shopping season begins. iMacs are often shared among family members and it makes a great family Christmas gift.

Rumor: Apple will release new iPods this fall

In 2011, Apple didn't do much to the iPod lineup. I expect to see updates to the iPod Touch and iPod Nano. I believe the iPod Touch will get a faster processer, more memory, a better screen, and a better camera. I think the iPod Nano may gain some form of Wi-Fi capabilities.

Update: Apple announced new iPods on September 12, 2012. My belief that the iPod Touch would get a faster processer, more memory, a better screen, and a better camera proved correct. The iPod Nano did not gain Wi-Fi capabilities but did gain Bluetooth 4.0 capabilities to wirelessly stream music to speakers. Fact: Apple will release a major software update for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches

Apple will be releasing iOS 6 this fall. The update will contain lots of new features. I anticipate that iOS 6 will become available two days prior to the new iPhone being released so if I am accurate with my September 21st prediction for the iPhone 5 then we should be seeing iOS 6 available on September 19th.

Update: Apple announced on September 12, 2012 that iOS 6 would be available on September 19th.
